Overlay at New Brighton

on 2014-04-28, 16:39
I notice there was an overlay in the 25/25 at New Brighton over the weekend.  Am I right in thinking that is the first time in a 25/25 event ?

Coupled with the lower-than-average turnout at Leicester two weeks ago, it looks like the steam might be going out of the series.

Yes, first overlay.

Probably too early to say that the series is losing traction, but the North West region have in the past been known to go to the well too often for their own good, and we perhaps need to bear in mind that the New Brighton event came just a week after the heavily promoted "Easter Beast" linked game was staged.

That event had several Day 1s across a number of different North West Grosvenor casinos, with the final day at Bolton on Easter Monday. No doubt some players played more than one day 1, which would have sucked a fair amount of money out of the pockets of the very same player pool who could otherwise have been expected to turn up at New Brighton.

The North West also had to contend with the "scandal" of 44,000 chips going missing at Bolton, an act of folly which everyone seems to have assumed was down to one individual. It was reported that 19 x 1000 chips and 5 x 5000 chips were missing at the end of the regular Friday night game.

Far more likely, I think, that a few individuals - separately or perhaps collectively - had the bright idea of boosting their Day 2 Easter Beast stacks by entering the (cheaper) Friday comp to grab some extra chips for Monday, a pretty pointless exercise as the loss was discovered as soon as the Friday game was over, and as a result the casino used different chips on Day 2 of the Easter Beast.

That aside, hopefully the 25/25 events in the Midlands and other areas will continue to be strong. It's good to see our local casinos supporting each other's legs with plenty of guaranteed seats in live satellites, and it's just a pity Grosvenor's online wing couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

I recently had some contact with their online managers in the hope of resurrecting MPF's association with the Grosvenor ipoker skin, so we could run some MPF exclusive games for the 25/25 series, but I quickly grew frustrated by their inability to resolve issues dating back two years, or answer the simplest of questions about current proposals. While they initially seemed willing to provide some added value for MPF members, they dragged the business out over a few weeks and failed to commit to anything before I lost patience with them (again). Presumably they thought their impending hook up with the new Not-Quite-The-Hendon Mob forum would have players rushing back to the skin but it doesnt seem like it has panned out that way, so they have probably blown their entire promotional budget now. Very Happy

Be interesting to see how long Barny Ross and Joe stick with them.

Ascot - drop me a line in regards to your requests for online the guys - I'll do what I can...

In regards to the 25/25 loosing it's pull only time will tell but I believe with the extension of the events (& more to come!) it will become slightly diluted... Leicester came up against some horrendous competition the same weekend (GPS,DTD both overlaying, The student chmps in Cov, Pokerstars live at the hIP' & tHE IPO) plus the fact it fell on a sunny bank holiday week during half term & New Brighton has issues with players from accross the Mersey not wanting to play "on the other side of the water" plus the hangover from The Easter Beast...
It's worth noticing that the south region is flying with the Vic making a record breaking £70k+ prize pool in it's first outing & the Midlands pulling £63k+ for it's first few legs is hardly shabby...

So... COME ON THE MIDLANDS - LETS SHOW 'EM HOW IT'S DONE!!!

The 44,000 chips missing at Bolton were almost certainly taken for the imminent event and swapping chip sets will scupper this.

However, they are not retired forever are they? And are the retired sets used at other casinos. So what prevents the chips being used at another venue or a future big event at the same casino when the chips are reintroduced. A reg ( with the chips ) just has to wait for a day one with the correct chips and reintroduce.

With branded chips, I am thinking gukpt , ukipt etc. How many different sets are there? What would happen if there were additional chips discovered at a tournament. I am guessing that the tournament director could do very little, except try and keep it quiet.

Are there any ways to protect the integrity of the game ?

There have been some big American comps that haven't kept it quiet about chip stealing and chips being sneaked into comps. I hope our casinos would be just as honest but there isn't much to be gained from washing your dirty linen in public if you cant identify the culprits

As a TD & Card room Manager I can assure you that the chip situation should be managed at all levels of a tournament!

Here at Grosvenor Birmingham we do chip counts ON ALL PLAYERS at the breaks, when we hit the final & also ballance our chips in play with the chips left "in stock" after the entry/re-buy cut off. These chip counts can be totalled to equate to chips in play alongside the chip reconciliation which flags any missing chips. This process is repeated at the final table & after the game to ensure chips are accounted for.

This works well for us on competitions with up to 200 runners but when you come to a competition like the Golliath and other larger festival events you have to rely on dealers & to some extent the other players making sure all irregularities are pointed out to the floor staff! Checks and ballances are done but the shear ammount of players in the tournaments make the individual chip counts hard to attain and total.

If chips are found to be missing, personally, I wouldn't want it to be widely known to the poker community that they are missing as I'd want to catch the individual! The other casinos would get an alert & cameras would be stringently checked by our security team but with the best cameras in the business and the best security in the business it would be a hard task to spot a player palming chips at any point during a tournament. This is where our checks and ballances above come into play then you can spot the period of play the chips where taken or added into the tournament.

If all the measures above fail then a list of all players are kept that played in this tournament then cross matched when the chips reappear to issolate the individuals that are responsible. More camera checks would be done & those players who played both would come under close scrutiny but even this is hard if the chips are passed between individuals that haven't played both...

In all cases prevention is better than investigation so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE as a TD if you have a suspicion that something untoward has happened then bring it to the attention of the floor - privately(!). If this is found to be a mistake theres no knock on problems for yourself but it will give the TD's info to investigate...
