Not a good start with Pokerstars

on 2018-01-05, 14:24
Well that was a shock this morning, Pokerstars emailed me and said i had changed my email address. Sure as eggs is eggs i logged on and my account is empty of all funds. Talking with support online and they informed me i had lost it all on their cash tables @ 5.00am today.

Looks like a perfect get out of jail card below for Pokerstars:

"The logins to your account show no failed attempts; whoever accessed your account knew your password perfectly.
Computer finger printing technology is utilized by our Security Team in order to determine which computer/device your account was accessed from. In this case, our investigation concludes that your account was accessed from a foreign computer/device where no logins were previously detected from. It is therefore possible that your login credentials have been compromised.

"To conclude this matter, we would like to advise you that we will not be liable for funds lost on your Stars Account. We will not be held liable for any losses as a result of insufficient security measures to ensure that your personal details remain secured. This is in accordance with the sections of our Terms of Service which state your responsibilities as an account owner."

Well i say BOLLOCKS Pokerstars.

They can tell that it was a foreign computer that logged into your account, but they didn`t feel like doing anything about it ?  That does seem pathetic.

If I log into my bank account from anything other than my regular computer, I am immediately stopped and not allowed to proceed until I input the One Time Code which they send to my mobile.  I seem to recall the same thing happens with Steam too, and that`s only a video game system, no money at risk.

Personally, having lost money years ago in the confusion when America banned online gaming, I now keep all my poker room balances low by withdrawing  winnings promptly and depositing the buyin for any substantial comp the same day I register for it.

I don't understand how they let somebody change the contact email address, i wouldn't be surprised if they typed my player name and selected forgot password and did it that way.
I blame stars for allowing this function without security checks.

That's crap Andy - I hope it wasn't for a lot. But although they state that their email "concludes" the matter, surely you have some recourse? Presumably they could freeze the account of whatever account the hacker dumped your funds to on cash? I believe that Stars has a problem with security and I haven't used them for about eighteen months. In a scenario similar to yours, my account was accessed, and funds lost on cash, but it was only $5 which was some sort of bonus they had applied to my account. They then froze my account, because they knew it had been hacked from a foreign source, and refused to unlock it unless I sent a picture of me holding my registered ID (my driving license) up against my face, which sounded the most ridiculous nonsense I told them to forget it. If they can identify foreign IP addresses, why don't they block them?

Meantime, have you scanned you computer for malware?

Just before Christmas I had my Paddy Power betting account accessed but luckily I had just withdrawn a chunk, and only £40 was in there which the hacker lost on roulette but since I kicked up hell and I had never played casino games before they refunded me. I could see no benefit to the hacker in doing this and did wonder if their night shift ever use player accounts for a bit of fun.

PS security have requested I do exactly as you stated, ID picture etc. If it was for a small amount of $ I wouldn't bother. Looks like I'm going to be jumping through hoops in getting my money back.
On another note on the advice of Panfried I withdrew most of my funds from other sites and I will only deposit for a paticular game I'm interested in.

Such a shame the industry leaders have an awful security policy.
