APAT Team Event

on 2016-01-24, 19:52
Had a cracking 8 days away in a Devon Lodge in The Hot tub in the middle of no where. Plenty of fresh country and sea air.So well refreshed and looking forward to the weekend.

Andy text me yesterday to ask about the arrangements for this weekend event.

APAT want us at the venue asap after 12 noon, so they can take team photographs.

Think we missed out on that at Manchester because it was all a bit disorganised.

Those of us who are booked into hotels wont be able to do so until 2pm, and the game starts at 2.30pm

I would suggest we meet at the Casino as soon as possible after 12 noon, when I will hand out the shirts to those players who dont have them already, get ourselves in the queue for the photos asap, then anyone who wants to shoot off to hotels to check in should have time to do that. Alternatively it might be possible to go and check in at the dinner break.

Comments and alternative suggestions welcome Very Happy

APAT - exactly how 'amateur' do you have to be ?

on 2016-01-25, 22:27
Looking down the runners for the APAT team event when I spy an interesting name on Table 17.
Now the question is exactly how good/bad are you allowed to be to qualify for 'amateur' APAT status ?

Representing the JOE BEEVERS FORUM is one JOE BEEVERS - SEAT 17/1  - now, if this is THE Joe Beevers, I would say that $2,000,000+ in earnings isn't really very amateurish ! Or, is it a case of the bigger they come the harder they fall ?

Can't wait for the w/end, x fingers for a good run.

Played on same table with joe at fox poker club a few years back. I remember him having the most enormous hands I have ever seen. Cards looked 'shrunk' in his paws

Very well played Graham a Stirling job on achieving 15th and very unlucky with your KK v AA.

Well done Graham. And unlucky to everyone else we all had our fair share of bad beats and outdraws.with none of us doing much wrong. Mine was AQ spades Against AQ Clubs so it is not to difficult to work out how that panned out. Enjoyed the weekend and it was good to meet up with everyone.

thoughts on APAT LUTON

on 2016-02-05, 00:39
A few thoughts from Wurzel on my first APAT TEAM EXPERIENCE : -

1) THE EVENT ORGANISERS HAVE A LITTLE WAY TO GO, especially for sorting out the start to Day 1.
2) WHEN PLAYING, IT WAS NICE TO BE 'LOOKING OUT' FOR OTHERS AND NOT JUST SELFISHLY 'NITTING AWAY'.
3) HAVING PLAYED WITH/AGAINST A FEW OF THE MPF CREW, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THOSE ON THE FINAL TWO
TABLES WERE NO MORE SKILLED THAN US COLLECTIVELY, THEY HAD JUST RUN BETTER (AND BOY DID WE HAVE
SOME BAD LUCK). SO THERE'S HOPE FOR MEDALS IN THE FUTURE, IF WE GET INVITED BACK.
4) IT WOULD DEFINITELY BE BETTER IF WE ALL BOOKED TWIN BEDS !!!!

THX for the kind words about my individual performance, I just got VERY lucky at the end of Day 1 to go into Day 2 well placed but ending up 15th on Day 2 just as well had been 150th - close but no cigar !

Could I have got away from KK vs AA, here at Luton I doubt it, but if it had been in a big money tournament then hopefully, yes, - my opponent had only joined the table 30 minutes earlier and was playing fast and loose with massive re-raises pre and post flop; after my initial x3 raise, he re-raised enough to put us both in an 'all-in' or fold situation, so realistically he can only have one of 2/3 hands but this time I chose the wrong option. It's another thing learnt and popped into the experience bank to draw on another time. Sad Roll on 2017. Cool Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

This is certainly true, and it`s a regular experience, not just with APAT.

I once went to a UKIPT tournament and found myself standing out in the rain with eminent professional players and journalists because, incredibly, the casino management hadn`t noticed that they were hosting a major event, didn`t open their doors until the last minute, and had only one girl on the front desk to check members in and to process the very many visitors and spectators who were not members.

On another occasion, I played in a major event in London which included players from across Europe.  The casino provided one valet in the cardroom to serve ~400 players.

Years ago, at an earlier stage in my working life, I was a senior manager at Rank (who own the Grosvenor chain).  At that time, the Company was widely respected for the quality of their management training and of their customer service.  We put managers through a lengthy and detailed traiining programme and required that they pass tough examinations before we turned them loose on the customers.  If any of our managers had permitted this kind of incompetence in his branch, he would have been moved to a less challenging role (or out of the door) immediately.  I don`t understand how standards can have fallen so far; and I don`t mean to suggest that it`s just Grosvenor.  It seems to run right across the casino industry.

Perhaps because poker is the core of their offer and they have fewer distractions, only DTD seem capable of regularly getting the organisation of live poker tournaments right.  Their events normally start exactly at the scheduled time and are well staffed with competent people.  To my mind, that should be the norm everywhere.

I totally agree and I feel relieved that others feel the same way. I have never known an industry where customer care is so poor. I always thought it was because gamblers will return again and again no matter what service you put in front of them?

Re: APAT Team Event

I was discussing this a few months ago with a former casino employee.Who stated that due to higher taxation levels on the casinos income, they have had to cut back staff to cover the costs. They also said that new employees are in fact being offered less wages than before. The Genting had stopped sending out offers to people on their birthdays. The casinos are trying to keep the wages down and the first to suffer are the waiting on staff. To some Casinos Poker is a burden as many players now go out of the casino in the breaks to smoke or  even to eat as casino food has gone more expensive and less choice on the menu.In the past players went to the tables and machines to play, but in general especially in the poorer areas. there is less money available to spend. This has lead to less in depth training of employees as it is expensive and time consuming, and many are just thrown in at the deep end. Some with little english as well.
